You would be forgiven for thinking that Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF30 (£24.50) was the answer to that annual skincare conundrum: what to do about incorporating a higher sun protection factor than usual into your routine for summer. Buying a separate sun screen to use over your normal moisturiser can be a bit hit or miss – I’ve found that some of them leave me looking like a ghost, and others don’t form a great base for my foundation.
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF30, described as “a light-textured daily hydrator,” is a variation on the hugely popular, bestselling Ultra Facial Cream and offers a decent SPF and broad spectrum UVA protection – so it sounds ideal for those of us who have skin prone to dehydration and are looking for a moisturiser with built-in sun protection.
But (and I’ll bet you knew there was a “but” coming!) it turns out that Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF30 just isn’t for me. I realise, from all the glowing reviews I’ve seen elsewhere, that I’m in a minority but I just do not like this moisturiser. As promised, it does absorb easily into the skin, despite feeling quite oily to the touch as it’s rubbed in. The problem, for me, seems to come a little further down the line – my foundation (which looks fine over every moisturiser I’ve tried in recent times) doesn’t seem to like it, and I don’t like the shininess that comes through within a couple of hours of application.
My advice would be: try before you buy. Kiehl’s is very good at offering facials and opportunities to try the products. Who knows? Maybe you’ll love it! Let me know …
