Elizabeth Arden Plush Up Lip Gelato (£22) sounds like the ideal lipstick for a summer holiday – but it turns out that it could well be a great midwinter pick-me-up too, though you do wonder where on earth beauty companies get these silly names from!
Plush Up Lip Gelato is – according to Elizabeth Arden – a sheer lipstick with a glossy finish which instantly plumps up the lips. It’s encased in an unusually designed tube, slightly reminiscent of Chanel’s Allure lipsticks – you open it by pushing up with your thumb under the logo on the side of the tube.
What was most impressive about the Lip Gelato I tried – the beautiful, retro pinky-coral Poppy Pout shade – is the vibrant colour. It didn’t actually appear sheer on my lips. It had a strong presence. Even once the initial glossy finish and colour had faded, the lips were stained for quite a while – which I wouldn’t have expected from a sheer lipstick.
I can’t say I particularly noticed an instant plumped-up effect, however. What was immediately apparent to me was an initial tingling sensation in my lips, a feeling that took me straight back to the mid-1990s when Lip Venom* (anyone else remember that?!) was the buzz of the beauty world as it stimulated the circulation in the lips to make them swell up.
If you’re not too fussed about plumping up your lips, but do love fab colour and comfort in your lipstick then give the Lip Gelatos a whirl. There are 20 shades to choose from and many of them are downright stunning.
(* I just googled Lip Venom, and it’s still available!)
