e.l.f. 3-in-1 Mascara (£4.50) has to be the best value mascara to hit the shops in recent times – after all, you don’t find many that give you change from a fiver. But is it a bargain or would you be better putting your fiver towards a pricier alternative?
The new e.l.f. 3-in-1 Mascara is an updated version of a popular mascara from the American beauty brand’s collection. It has been reformulated and boasts an updated style of brush head – like Max Factor Lash Crown Mascara, it has a sort of crown at the end of the brush to enable you to reach into the corners of the eyes and catch the tiniest lashes. Unlike the Max Factor wand, however, it also has quite a chunky brush on the wand to create a dramatic look.
The triple aim of e.l.f. 3-in-1 Mascara is to lengthen, define and volumise lashes but I’d say it scores mostly for defining, curling, volumising and creating quite an intense look.
I found this mascara quite easy to use – it was possibly easier to create a good-looking set of lashes quickly with this one than with the Max Factor alternative which took more practice. The only drawback was that after a good few hours’ wear, I found that the black mascara had repeated on the skin above my eyes. It certainly wasn’t as bad as the last mascara I tried, which left me with smudges all along the skin under my eyes, but it did mean that this is probably not going to become one of my forever mascaras; the ones which I’ll always be happy to return to .. But if I ever find myself with just £4.50 to spend on my eye make-up, it will certainly be high on my list of possible purchases!
